The group held its first Research Tools Sharing Session on April 27. NotebookLM was selected as the best tool of the session.
At the 3rd Forum on Hydrological Process Change Simulation and Regulation held in Zhuhai, doctoral student Shen Ye was invited to give an oral presentation. Her talk, titled "Reshaping Effects of Urban Underlying Surfaces on Tropical Cyclone Rainfall Distribution," highlighted the important influence of human-modified land surfaces on large-scale meteorological processes.
The doctoral students Zhuang Jiacheng and Zhang Jinghan of the research group successfully passed the college's doctoral qualification examination. The titles of their papers are "Flood Mechanism and Risk Prediction in Small Watersheds in Mountainous Areas of North China" and "Characteristics and Formation Mechanism of Extraordinary Floods in my country".
At the 4th International Conference on Basin Water Resources Management and Integrated Governance held in Ningbo, doctoral student Shen Ye delivered an invited oral presentation on how urban underlying surfaces influence the characteristics of summer storm cloud systems, and received the Best Presentation Award.
Weng Jiaze, a doctoral student in the research team, published a research paper titled "Spatially coherent changes in Chinese annual flood peaks revealed by a consensus-based machine learning framework for regionalization" in the Journal of Hydrology, proposing a river basin flood zoning method based on "consensus clustering".
Doctoral student Zhang Jinghan published a paper titled "Synoptic origins of extreme riverine floods over the North China Plain with focus on the tail behaviors" in Geophysical Research Letters, examining the synoptic drivers of extreme riverine floods over the North China Plain.
Doctoral student Yang Yixin published a paper titled "Synchronization of global peak river discharge since the 1980s" in Nature Climate Change, revealing the synchronization of global peak river discharge since the 1980s.
Associate Professor Yang Jiachuan of the City University of Hong Kong was invited to give a keynote report entitled "Research on the Impact of Hydrometeorology on the Development of Smart Cities", discussing the important application of hydrometeorological research in the construction of smart cities.
Members of the research team went to Xi'an to participate in the 22nd China Water Forum. Master student Ye Xianyi gave an oral report titled "Potential Impact of the Proposed Reservoir on Local Precipitation and Water Vapor Channels in the Yajiang Grand Canyon", demonstrating the research results of the research team in water resources management.
Members of the research team conducted field investigations in nine small and medium-sized watersheds in the middle and southern sections of the Taihang Mountains and collected a large amount of hydrogeological data, providing important first-hand information for related research.
Professor Yang Long published a research paper titled "Dynamics-constrained rainfall projection reveals substantial increase in population exposure to unprecedented floods in the North China Plain" in the journal "Communications Earth & Environment", which revealed that the population in the North China Plain faces a significant increase in unprecedented flood risk.
The research team successfully held an annual academic seminar at Nanjing University, inviting many well-known scholars and experts at home and abroad to conduct academic exchanges and showcase the research results of the research team over the past year.
The research team published a research paper titled "Urban development pattern's influence on extreme rainfall occurrences" in the journal "Nature Communications", revealing the impact mechanism of urban development pattern on extreme rainfall occurrences.
The project "Research on the Regional Distribution Patterns and Formation Mechanisms of Extraordinary Floods in my country" applied by the research group was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, with a research period of 2024-2027.
